Reverend Dr. Joseph W. Lyles

Dr. Lyles is the anointed Pastor of Fort Foote Baptist Church in Fort Washington, Maryland. He and his lovely wife, Sheila Marie Lyles, have led and ministered this church for over 25 years.

Dr. Lyles was born in the District of Columbia and was educated in Waldorf, Maryland. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Glenville State College in Glenville, West Virginia and received his Masters and Doctorate of Divinity from Howard University in Washington, DC.

He received Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at the age of 16 while participating in a religious camp meeting in Damascus, Maryland. He has been a devout servant of the Lord since that time. In 1981,

Dr. Lyles joined Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Washington, DC., and served as a Deacon for three and one-half years. While serving at Mt. Sinai, the Pastor, the late Reverend Dr. David Durham recognized his potential and desire to preach the Word of God, he began to mentor, guide and instill his spiritual insight and wisdom.

On February 7, 1988, Reverend Dr. Lyles was licensed to preach the gospel at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Lyles was selected to serve as interim Pastor of Fort Foote Baptist Church in January 1990. On April 8, 1990, Dr. Lyles was installed as the seventh Pastor of Fort Foote Baptist Church. Under Dr. Lyles' leadership, since 1990, the membership has increased; Sunday school and bible study attendance has increased significantly. With the church membership growing, there are over 40 ministries, committees and support groups plus a Child Development Center available to meet the needs of the church body and community. With the increased growth, the need for a larger sanctuary was needed. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on August 19, 2000, and the new edifice was completed in December 2001.

Dr. Lyles has a heart for missions – locally, nationally and internationally. Dr. Lyles led the first mission’s ministry to perform community outreach assistance (i.e., plumbing, painting, home repairs, lawn care, electrical repair, evangelism) for seniors and single parents in Prince George's County and Charles counties. This community outreach continues to be an annual church-wide activity. On the national level, Dr. Lyles inspired and led hundreds of members and friends to New Orleans, Louisiana and Tuscaloosa, Alabama to help rebuild homes and spiritually support families and individuals. He has repeatedly organized and led international mission trips to Nairobi, Kenya; Uganda, Africa; Kingston, Jamaica; and Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Dr. Lyles served as 1st Vice President and as President of the African American Fellowship of the Southern Baptist Convention. In March 2009, he was honored at the WYCB 7th Annual Prayer Breakfast for his leadership and service to the community. As a known faith leader, he was invited to participate in the Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships meeting with government and faith leaders at the White House. He is currently on the Board of Trustees for the District of Columbia Baptist Convention Foundation and on the Advisory Board for the Salvation Army.

Dr. Lyles' favorite scripture is Philippians 3:13-14, "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."
